Constructed by Hans Meurer, this is one of the few stone buildings in the city.  It was used for civic functions i.e. weddings and dances until 18th century. At later periods it was used as barracks, stables, a lazarette, a prison, storage for salt, foodstuffs, beer and recently housed the regional museum.  It now hosts a bakery/café and office rooms. The building shows the Renaissance influence in the curved gables and the portals. The coats of arms of Alsfeld and the Landgrave of Hesse adorn magnificent corner oriels.
